How to Use Onion Hair Oil: The Four-Minute Routine
A step-by-step onion hair oil routine — how much to use, how long to leave it, how often, and how to wash it out without stripping your hair.

The oil matters. The routine matters more. Most people who say an oil "did nothing" used it once a fortnight for ten seconds. Here is the routine our returning customers keep to.
1. Warm it in your hands
Pour a coin-sized amount into your palm — about a teaspoon for shoulder-length hair — and rub your hands together. Body heat is enough. Never microwave oil.
2. Work the scalp, not the lengths
Part your hair into four sections. Press the oil into the scalp with your fingertips in small circles for three to four minutes. This is the traditional champi, and the massage is the part that matters most. Whatever is left on your hands can go through the ends.
3. Leave it in
An hour at minimum. Overnight is better: wrap your hair in a cotton scarf or sleep on an old pillowcase. A good blend is light enough that it will not ruin your linen.
4. Wash it out properly
Use a mild, sulphate-free shampoo. Lather once, rinse, and if your hair is fine, lather a second time. Follow with conditioner on the lengths.
How often?
Two to three times a week. Consistency beats quantity — a little, often, for eight weeks is the fair test.
Common mistakes
- Using too much. More oil means more washing, not better results.
- Skipping the massage. Pouring oil on the scalp is not the same as working it in.
- Giving up at week two. Hair grows about a centimetre a month; judge it at week eight.
Patch-test first
Put a little behind your ear, wait 24 hours, and check for any reaction before using it on your scalp — especially if you have sensitive skin.
